Birthday Party Fun: Mall Mania

We held Hannah's 12th birthday party on Saturday at our local mall. It was a scavenger hunt and we called it "Mall Mania." I'll warn you now that this is a long post with lots of pictures.

I found a pattern for the invitations online and tweaked it a little. I printed them on cardstock and laminated them to look like credit cards. Here's a sample of the front and back (click to enlarge). ("Jane Doe" would have been the invited girls' name.)

I also made t-shirts for all the girls. I printed the image on iron-on transfer paper designed for dark shirts (so that the white part would show up). I printed the words on iron-on transfer paper designed for light shirts. I thought they turned out really cute and it made it easy to spot the girls as they ran around the mall.

Because I didn't want the girls running around the mall alone, I solicited the help of Alyssa and some of her friends to serve as Team Captains (2 of the other helpers had siblings attending the party). This worked out really well. I think the older girls had just as much fun as the younger ones and it freed me up to get food ready while they were doing the activities. Here's a picture of all the girls in their shirts and the helpers.

I divided them into teams of 2 and handed them their first set of 6 clues. I gave the teams the same clues but in different order so that they wouldn't all be doing the same thing at the same time. Here's what they had to do and some random pictures of each activity:

Go into the clothing store of your choice and have each team member try on a different crazy (mismatched) outfit. Have the Team Captain take a picture of everyone on your team wearing the crazy outfits.
Have your Team Captain take a picture of everyone on your team sitting on a couch in Dillard’s.
Have your Team Captain take a picture with everyone on your team wearing a different hat from Claire’s. Be sure to put the hats back nicely before receiving your next clue.
Go to the escalator and have a stranger take a picture of your team with your Team Captain on the escalator.
Find a red head in the mall and see if you can all take a picture with him/her. Have the Team Captain take a picture of the entire team with the red head. (A few teams were very creative with this one!)

Go to Natalie’s CandyBar and have each team member try a sample piece of candy. Have your Team Captain take a picture of the team eating the candy. You have to swallow the candy before receiving your next clue.

In addition to the first set of clues, I had 4 bonus clues that they could do for extra points.

Get a picture of your team with something in the mall with the number 12 on it.
Everyone on the team hops on one foot from one clue to the next. Have your Team Captain take a picture.
Find someone in the mall with a Mohawk and see if you can all take a picture with him/her.
Find the balloon man and have him make a balloon hat for one team member. Have the Team Captain get a picture of the team member wearing the hat.

While the girls were doing the first set of clues, I ordered lunch from Chick-Fil-A and had it ready for them. They ate lunch and visited a little bit and then we went on to the second set of clues. I re-selected the teams for this round so that they would get to be with someone different.

Go to Bath & Body Works and have each team member try a sample hand sanitizer.
Go into XXI and have each team member hold earrings to your ears while your Team Captain takes a picture.
Find a dog somewhere in the mall and take a picture of it with your entire team.
Go to the food court and have each team member go to a different place and ask for a cup of water. Have your Team Captain take your picture at a table sipping water. Be sure to throw away the empty cups before receiving your next clue.
Find any store in the mall that has scarves. Have everyone in your group try on a different scarf, and have your team captain take your picture. Be sure to put the scarves back nicely before receiving your next clue.
Find the gumball machines labeled “Bubble Yummy.” Buy a gumball and have one team member chew the gum and blow a big bubble while another team member takes a picture. (I included a quarter in the envelope with this clue.)
I got the most flack about the bubble gum challenge, but that one (by FAR!) had the funniest pictures, so I'm still glad I included it. :)

After the second set of clues, the girls ate a cookie cake (purchased from the Great American Cookie Company in the mall) and I gave out prizes before the parents picked them up.

The party lasted 2 hours, which was a just enough time to get all the games done and still have a little bit of time to visit. Best of all, we weren't out in the heat!
